Describe your role in The Wizard of Laws.
I have two roles: I play the eccentric mother of our heroine (who I suspect hits the cooking sherry pretty hard behind the scenes) as well as a narrator who just can’t quite get it right.

What should be the theme song of your life?
“You can call me Al” by Paul Simon.

What position do you play on Swift Justice?
I have played defence for the last couple of games, for the sole reason that I can skate backwards (sort of).

Tell us a little about the instrument you play in Law Show band:
I play violin. I started playing when I was in grade four and was in orchestra until I graduated from high school. Since then my violin has spent a decent amount of time collecting dust under my bed, but I usually wind up being recruited to play at different events a couple of times each year.

Surviving Your First Year of Law School
Amir Reshef (2L)

Everyone has different reasons for going to law school. We all have different backgrounds and interests, but one thing many of us have in common is that we want to be successful in school while still having a life outside of it. After finishing my first year, I can reassure you that if you work hard, keep focused, have fun with your classmates and remember your life outside of law, it’s possible to not only survive law school, but enjoy it!

Law Girl: Katie Clackson

April 11, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Name/Year: Katie Clackson/2L

What did you do for reading week? Hung out with friends, worked on some SLS stuff, watched movies, relaxed…and considered doing homework.

Plans for the summer yet? Work: SLS. Play: Camping, going to Vancouver, getting rid of my winter tan.

Advice for 1L’s looking for classes – exam-based or paper based? I would say recognize your strengths. If you know you’re a strong paper writer, take paper courses. If you’re good at exams, take exam-based courses. If you’re good at both, you don’t need any advice.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you? I can’t swim (which is funny in itself) and in high school we had to do a two-week swimming unit for phys-ed. I spent that two weeks wearing a purple floaty belt and “swimming” in the shallow end. Did I mention this class was co-ed?

What is your favourite movie? It’s so hard to pick a favourite – I love movies. Revolutionary Road, Love Actually, and 500 Days of Summer are up there.

Favourite breakfast food? Cereal, toast with peanut butter and sliced banana, pancakes…I love it all. Breakfast is my favourite meal!

What is something not a lot of people know about you but that you wish more people did know? I’m five feet tall. I don’t need you to tell me I’m short. I figured it out long before I came to school in flats and you noticed it.

Would you be offended if I brought my own snacks to the movie theatre? Not at all! Movie snacks are so expensive. I would even do the fake cough so you could open your pop without being noticed.

Stolen from Yahoo Answers: If I reach the daily limit for withdrawals on my debit card can I still get cash back at Wal-Mart? I hope not. I don’t believe in Wal-Mart. And I really don’t believe in the bank of Wal-Mart.

iPhone, Blackberry, or Android? I probably should not have an opinion on this since I still rock a first generation LG Shine, but Blackberry.

What fictional character would you want to hang out with? Rainbow Brite. She’s cute and sweet and has star sprinkles.

If you weren’t in law, what would you be doing? Everyone tells me I should have been a kindergarten teacher, but I think I would have gone to grad school.

What’s your (G-rated) guilty pleasure? Candy – except I don’t feel that guilty about it.

What is something you are really, really bad at? Being a salesperson. I don’t know how I’m ever going to get clients.

Law Girl: Emily Keene

Name: Emily Keene

Year: 1L

Hometown/Undergrad: Queenston, Ontario/History and English Literature

How do you feel about being singled out for Canons? Are you ready for your newfound fame? Like all U of A law students, I have been hoping for this moment of small-time fame since childhood. Kidding – but I really am excited!

What’s your favourite thing about law school, now that you’re a seasoned pro?
I’m far from pro yet, but I love that I’m meeting great people every day! Also, law show was a riot and I was proud to be a part of it.

Least favourite thing? It boosts my confidence to have those ‘aha!’ moments where everything I’m learning comes together in my head, but those other moments of feeling totally inadequate in class are awful. And, while I’m a fan of winter, -33 with the wind chill is a bit much.

What are you doing for Reading Week? Spending time back home in Niagara. Don’t worry, Edmonton. I won’t forget you.

Who would play you in the movie version of your life, and why? Sure, I’d love one of my favourite Oscar winning actresses to portray me, but ultimately, the director would probably cast someone with big hair, since I have enough on my head for at least 3 to 4 people. Someone who comes to mind is that girl who played Topanga on ‘Boy Meets World’? She had thick hair. She’s not exactly famous anymore, so I guess it would be a made for TV movie.

Would you rather be trapped in a room full of bees or in one full of spiders? Spiders. The bees could offer me honey, but the spiders could build me a giant web so I could reach the nearest window and escape.

When you’re not reading case law, what ARE you reading? I love fiction, but now that I’m reading so much law, I usually don’t want to even see another book when I’m finished studying for the day.

Ten years ago: where were you and what were you doing? In February 2001, I was living in the donut shop capital of Canada: St. Catharines, Ontario. I was in Grade 9, probably learning math that I no longer understand.

What’s on your PVR/are you watching for free on the internet? I’m working my way through the seasons of House, and I try to keep up with The Office.

2012. Thoughts? I came across a site with a countdown, time left “till the end of the world”. Apparently there’s less than 700 days left. Make them count, people! Anyway, there are too many 2012 predictions to count. Hopefully the world lives to see 2013; it would be nice to graduate.

It’s February: what’s love got to do with it? Apparently a Saint Valentine was buried on February 14. That doesn’t sound very romantic, does it? He was executed for secretly marrying Christian couples, which was a crime during the reign of Claudius II. Thanks Wikipedia! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Caleigh Rabbitte (3L)

Name: Caleigh Jane Doran Rabbitte

Hometown: Calgary

Current year: 3L

Where are you currently living?
Sha Tin. No, I am not kidding, and if you cannot see why it’s funny, you don’t understand toilet humour at all.

What is the coolest thing about your new place?
Well, living on the side of a mountain in a tropical mega city where you can go to the beach, Disneyland, China, and your classes all in one day is pretty cool, but if I had to choose I would have to say its shotgunning turbos outside the 7-11 for the price of 1 CDN$.

Biggest cultural difference?
Lack of vegetables, which leads into my issue of salads here. Salads here are either made with potatoes and mayo (gross) are made with 50% corn (yuck) or worse, boiled lettuce (WTF?).

Do blondes have more fun?
The blondes on this side of the world are few and far between, and sadly, probably have less fun because they are stared at and pointed at by children even more than I am.

Is there anybody out there?
I think if I yelled it right now, nobody would answer, but that’s because most of the my floor in my residence are girls from the Mainland and they seem afraid of me and my western personality. I know they are there because they shout loudly through the halls all day and night.

What are you most looking forward to when you get back to Edmonton?
Apparently people who are old enough to be in law school in Canada are not forced to share bedrooms, so that will be a welcome change.

What are you least looking forward to when you get back to Edmonton?
I thought I could go on having tuition waived, wearing flip flops and shorts every day, taking only pass-fail courses and travelling every other week to another country forever. So, in other words, the horrible depression of not being on a term abroad. Oh and that lovely +20 to -40 temperature change. Charming.

Did Tony Soprano die?
I don’t know who that is, but once when I was in the New York airport I saw an old looking large Italian man and I pointed him out as an Italian mobster to my friends. He was very much alive eating Dunkin’ Donuts.

What TV show has been cancelled that should have been cont’d?
I know why Jenna asked this question. She wanted me to go on at length about a certain detective show that ended unceremoniously to purposely inflict pain upon me. Fortunately I make everybody else I know suffer by lending out the Veronica Mars DVD sets in turn.

Law idols. Do you have any?
I know you expect me to put John Law because he rocks the bow tie, or Wayne Renke because he could put me in a headlock, or Lewis Klar because he is a legend. But my real law idol is Caitlin Mason because she still believes she can change the world for the better.

Kathryn Laurie (1L)

Hometown: Edmonton… Just when I think I’m out, this place pulls me back in.
Undergrad: BA (English)
Undergrad Institution: University of Alberta
What is your best law school moment so far (besides being asked to be law girl/guy)? The alumni rugby game after-party. Exercise plus dehydration plus heavy pre-drinking inevitably led to pure comedy.
What is your worst law school moment so far? The morning after the alumni rugby game after-party. Soooo toxic.
What was worse, not having access to the locker room or to the gavel? I haven’t yet been locked out of either place, but not having access to the Gavel would be infinitely worse. I don’t think I could even find my classroom without my morning java.
What song best describes your first week here? “Home for a Rest”, Spirit of the West
At what point did you realize law school wasn’t what you thought it would be like? During my first class with Professor Gall. Storytime with Gramps is about as far removed as you can get from the classroom horrors of “The Paper Chase”.
If you could change one thing about our Faculty, what would it be? The building. My last degree was also spent in a concrete bunker (the Humanities Building across the parking lot), so I’m definitely ready to move into a new architectural era. Barring that, I would say the abolishment of 8 am classes would be a very welcome change for students and faculty alike.
Upper years: friends or foes? Absolutely friends! By the end of week one, upper years hooked me up with cheap books, CANS, the low-down on my profs, first-year survival secrets, and all sorts of unmentionables not fit for print in this newspaper.
Do you know what Canons of Construction is? Yes, I googled it after being asked to be Law Girl. No, not really. I’m pretty sure the faculty actually tossed a copy into my welcome package.
So far, what is the club that you are happiest you joined? Rugby, of course! It’s damn good fun and the people are second to none.
What fashion faux pas do you consider the worst? Socks and sandals. If you find yourself sporting this look in public, it’s time to consider purchasing a timeshare in Florida.
On a scale of 1-10 how cool do you consider KE$HA? Negative five for putting a dollar sign in her name.
What was the last movie you saw? The Road. It was a seriously traumatic experience; I finished the film quivering on the floor in the fetal position.
If you could spend the day with anybody, dead or alive, who would it be? Salman Rushdie, one of my favourite novelists and perhaps one of the greatest writers of the last century. If Salman wasn’t available, Colin Angus (a Canadian explorer/adventurer) would be loads of fun to hang out with, but preferably not while he’s being chased down the Amazon by Peruvian terrorists.
