Blue Jays: #OurMoment

Allana McComb (3L)

It is well-known that the Blue Jay’s offence struggled throughout all of September despite having the best pitching staff in the American League. However, that all changed starting with the Wild Card game against the Orioles on October 4th. Stroman didn’t get the run support he was hoping for, but in the 11th inning Encarnacion hit a three run homer to win the game, sending them into the playoffs against the Texas Rangers.

This is the second year in a row that the Blue Jays have made it to playoffs but they once again faced the Texas Rangers. Everyone was expecting a hard-fought series like last year, but that didn’t happen. The Blue Jays finally found the bats and started hitting like no tomorrow. They easily won the first two games in Texas. Coming to Toronto the Rangers early on showed they weren’t ready to give up yet. Every time the Jays scored the Rangers would answer until they were tied at 6-6. In the bottom of the 10th inning Donaldson started it off with a beautiful double, followed by an intentional walk to Encarnacion. What should have been an easy double-play turned into the game winning run. Odor touched second but threw the ball into the dirt at first, allowing Donaldson to round third and steal home. Having the error be played by Rougned Odor was just the cherry on top. Next they will face either the Boston Red Sox or the Cleveland Indians, who currently lead the series at 2-0.

Regardless of the outcome of the playoffs, there is still a lot of potential change that will happen for the 2017 team. Encarnacion and Bautista will most likely not be coming back; Bautista because he overvalues his worth and Encarnacion because the team undervalued his worth in spring training. Edwin may end up in Boston next year replacing the retired Ortiz who has endorsed him to be his replacement. Saunders is also going to be a free agent and Dickey is most likely retiring. The pitching staff will remain mostly the same, which allows fans to be hopeful for another strong showing in 2017. The team will have to rebuild a bit, and I’m hoping Ezequiel Carrera takes over as the starting Right fielder. Whatever happens, the change will be necessary to hopefully propel us into the playoffs for a third straight year.
