VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: CIVIL CLAIMS DUTY COUNSEL

Pro Bono Students Canada is still looking to recruit student volunteers for the Civil Claims Duty Counsel project in the upcoming school year.

Civil Claims Duty Counsel is a walk-in service offered at the Provincial Courthouse, allowing individuals with civil legal issues to meet with a volunteer lawyer for 45 minutes of free legal advice. Volunteering at CCDC involves staffing the intake desk, helping clients with paperwork, and briefing clients on their issues for the advising lawyers. Volunteering is generally done in shifts of two, with one volunteer sitting in and listening to the advice being given by the lawyers.

If you’re still looking for something to get involved with, CCDC is a great opportunity to get to know local firms personally, to practice interviewing clients, and to observe experienced lawyers manage clients dealing with difficult and emotional situations.

Some of the firms who volunteer with CCDC are: Miller Thomson, Parlee, Ogilvie, Field, RMRF, Witten, Ackroyd, Dentons, MLT, Emery Jamieson, and McLennan Ross.

We’re currently seeking volunteers for the upcoming school year. The following shifts have available openings for volunteers:

Tuesday: 10:00-12:00

Tuesday: 12-2:00

Wednesday: 12:00-2:00

Wednesday: 2:00-4:00

Thursday: 9:00-12:00
