Law Girl/Law Guy: Professor Edition

Law Prof Guy: Professor Eric Adams

Pet peeve in law students?

Law students at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law are always perfect in every way. Don’t change a thing, law students. Not a thing. Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

3 words to describe how you were as a law student:

Movie-obsessed, studious, intermittently wry.

Favourite law event and why?

My sons, Timothy and Fen, and I are longtime attendees of the LSA kids’ holiday party in December. In seven years, I’ve seen seven different magic acts that run the gamut from that clown scares me deeply to get that man a Hollywood agent. Also the cookie decorating station never changes. And I mean literally. I can only assume there is a large stash of white flavourless Costco cookies hidden somewhere in the building.

If you could take part in any moot, which one would you pick?

I was a Laskin mooter back in my Dalhousie days, so am keen to give it another shot. I’d like to meet myself in the semi-final and wipe the floor with myself. Actually, on second thought, that would be weird.

Who would you consider the most stylish Prof?

There is a lot of fashion forward on the 4th floor. Singling out anyone is difficult, but, in the end, you’ve got to give it to Professor Ugbogu. That guy brings his A game every morning. He makes me feel like I rolled out of a dumpster before arriving at work. He once complimented a sweater I was wearing. One of the happiest days of my life.

If you could take on a leadership role, would you rather be LSA President, ALR Editor in Chief or Steve Hello my Friend?

There is only one Steve so I can’t be him. I am un-electable, so LSA President is out too. I’ll go with ALR Editor in Chief. It will, no doubt, be awkward when I am forced to reject my own submissions, but sometimes difficult choices have to be made.

Law Prof Girl: Professor Barbara Billingsley

What would be your pet peeve with law students?

I wish that students wouldn’t change their clothes, their hairstyles or their preferred seats in class.  It is this sort of unreasonable behaviour that prevents me from learning everyone’s name!

3 words to describe how you were as a law student

“Younger Than Now” . . . I think that about covers it.

Favourite law event and why

Convocation, for two reasons.  First, I like the pomp and circumstance that surrounds the ceremony–it is a reminder of the luxury we all enjoy in working and studying at a prestigious university in a free country.  Second, it is immensely gratifying to see the students and their families so happy, relaxed, justifiably proud, and (if we are being honest) relieved.

If you could take part in any moot, which one would you pick?

The Laskin.  I like the combination of a constitutional law focus with a little travel thrown in.

Who would you consider the most stylish Prof

It is too close to call . . . we’re all pretty chic.

If you could take on a leadership role, would you rather be LSA President, ALR Editor in Chief or Steve Hello my Friend?

I’d take Steve’s job.  With all due respect to the LSA and the ALR, Hello My Friend Cafe is the cheeriest spot in the law building (which stands to reason, as there’s endless access to caffeine)
