ELSA Update: Tree Planting, Hikes & More!

Jacob Marchel (2L)

Greetings from the Environmental Law Students’ Association(ELSA) at the U of A.

ELSA has been busy this term, and we’re pretty happy about that. We had a great turnout for our first general meeting this past week, we had a very successful community event, and we’ve also appointed our 1L Reps!

Firstly, thanks to everyone who came to our general meeting. We appreciated your questions and input regarding ELSA’s development for this year. Secondly, congratulations to our 1L Reps David Demers and Jocelyn Siroris, they’ll no doubt become valuable additions to the ELSA team.

Thirdly, let me update you on our most recent and upcoming ELSA events. This past Saturday, September 28th at Emily Murphy Park the ESLA Exec Team took part in the 6th Annual Kenya Run for Water (10k/5k) organized by ICChange. ICChange is an umbrella organization that helps fund large-scale development projects that assist at-risk populations with improving community sustainability and the reduction of risks such as waterborne illness. If you’d like more information on ICChange, visit: www.icchange.ca.

ELSA, in addition to promoting environmental awareness within the Faculty of Law, believes that it’s important to get involved in other activities within Edmonton that support both local and international sustainability initiatives.

The ELSA Exec team raised considerable funds through donations and registration fees for the 5K Race and 100m Water Relay.  The Kenya run for Water had roughly 100 participants overall (the 5K race had approximately 35 participants).  The team had lots of fun and we’ll definitely be doing it next year!

This term we still have three more events. The first is our Tree Planting on Saturday, October 12 from 9:30am – 12:30pm at Victoria Park Hill. Equipment, trees, and a tree-planting instructor will be provided by the City of Edmonton. Free snacks and hot chocolate will be provided by ELSA (*Bring your reusable mugs!). The second event is our Elk Island Hike on Sunday, October 27. We will be carpooling, and this is a dog friendly event! The third event will be a guest speaker later on in the term who will discuss important issues affecting Canadian environmental law (*lunch will be provided). Details TBA.
