Meet a Professor: Gail Henderson
Name: Gail Henderson
Hometown: Brockville, Ontario
Undergrad Degree: Ethics, Society and Law
Welcome to the University of Alberta! How have your first few months been? They’ve been great. All these years I thought my friends from the Prairies were just whining about the “damp cold” in Ontario, but it’s true – it’s way worse!
What classes are you teaching? This year I’m teaching Corporations Law. I’m also coaching the Corporate/Securities moot team.
What were you doing before you came to the UofA? My doctoral studies in law at U of T. Before that, I practiced on Bay Street for a couple of years.
UofA is pretty awesome. What is the MOST awesome part of working here? The fact that I can walk to work. That’s pretty awesome.
What is the toughest part about being a new professor? Like any new job, the toughest part is the lack of familiarity with the institution and how things work, where to find things, etc., but luckily for me the other faculty and staff here have all been extremely helpful.
What is your favourite memory from law school? In my second year, we did a skit in Osgoode’s version of Law Show that was based on Survivor. I played a keener who ends up on the slacker tribe, so basically I was making fun of myself. It was a lot of fun to do, and my classmates seemed to enjoy it.
If you weren’t in law, what would you be doing? I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else (see answer to Undergrad Degree above), but I worked at Second Cup for three years, so maybe I would’ve bought a franchise.
Do you have any secret talents? I am a very good knitter.
If you could spend the day with anyone dead or alive, who would it be? Please don’t say Lord Denning. Charles Thompson, aka Frank Black, aka Black Francis, aka lead singer of the Pixies.
Did you prepare for the Mayan Apocalypse? Well, not on purpose, but now that you mention it, I did go out with some of my closest friends to a cozy new bar in my favourite Toronto neighbourhood and enjoyed a couple of glasses of a very nice Gamay, so it wouldn’t have been a bad way to go.
If you could have any super power, what would it be? To be in two places at once. That would be really useful.
