Beyond the Iron Curtain

Scott Nicol, 3L
This Spring I had the pleasure of attending the University of Alberta’s spring course in Granada. Planned conveniently after Winter semester exams and before articling week, I finished my last exam, filed my tax return, submitted articling position applications, and hopped on a plane to travel through London (as William and Kate were saying “I do”) to Eastern Europe.

Tourists don’t know where they’ve been, travelers don’t know where they’re going.

Cyrus Haghighi (3L)

This summer I decided to go against the conventional advice of summering—or even looking around for articles—and instead decided on an “around the world” solo travel adventure. It was to be one of the best summers of my life. Relying almost entirely on budget airlines, I managed to visit close to 15 countries and about 40 cities in 4 months. I first managed to fly budget all the way to Australia via Hawaii and slowly moved northwards to East Asia, and from there westwards through Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Serbia, Montenegro, and worked my way back to Canada. On the way I saw the most beautiful beaches, the most amazing views, the most incredible of dives, and the coolest of people.

My epic summer road trip with Trent, Jorge, and John

Trent and I began in Nordegg, Alberta (between Jasper and Banff). While we were there, Trent climbed an entire mountain with no equipment!! I took most of our camping gear across Abraham Lake with a tiny $80 inflatable raft. The lake is usually the most beautiful and blue I’ve ever been to, but this time it was windy and full of enormous waves. Luckily I never overturned, so I didn’t have to find out the big question on my mind—whether I’d make it to shore or freeze to death first.

My semester “abroad”… in Calgary

Greg Lane (3L)

When I first thought about doing an exchange semester in law school, my mind immediately drifted to places like, Hong Kong, Oslo, Australia or other exotic locales, yet for my semester “abroad” so to speak, I actually ended up in Calgary as a visiting student during this past semester. My reasons were just as mundane as my choice of locale, considering I went in order to maximize the number of natural resources classes in my degree. When I had started law school, I’d never considered doing a visiting semester at another Canadian school and actually didn’t even know you could. So, in this short piece I hope to provide at least a few hastily put together pointers based on my experiences.

I spent it in Rome! Temple University in Philadelphia has a campus near the Piazza del Popolo, right in the heart of Rome, Italy. Temple’s Beasley School of Law runs summer classes in international law out of that location.

Melissa Jakobfi, 3L

Law school, as we all at least suspected, attracts certain personality types. We all know the stereotypes: “Type A,” argumentative, bookish, socially awkward. This heavy concentration of similar personalities essentially guarantees that, in your three years of law school, you’re bound to encounter the following five people:

He Said
John Gilbert LL.B

When the magnanimous Jason Buttuls asks you to come out of retirement and write a Canons article about articling, there is only one answer. After he calms you down and makes you stop screaming profanity at him, you will eventually feel guilty about the way you reacted and accede. You will also make Dana write something too. Here goes:

Surviving Your First Year of Law School
Amir Reshef (2L)

Everyone has different reasons for going to law school. We all have different backgrounds and interests, but one thing many of us have in common is that we want to be successful in school while still having a life outside of it. After finishing my first year, I can reassure you that if you work hard, keep focused, have fun with your classmates and remember your life outside of law, it’s possible to not only survive law school, but enjoy it!

Law Show Primer

Jason Buttuls (3L)

Here is a simple primer on Law Show. It is an annual musical production going into its 17th year that raises money for a notable charity. For the last three years the charity has been the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters. We raised approximately $90,000 over the three-year period through ticket sales, sponsorships and our very popular silent auction. This year marks the beginning of our three-year commitment to Edmonton’s Zebra Child Protection Centre. The Zebra Centre provides children with counseling while ensuring that justice is achieved for the abused child. This amazing charity and our ability to raise a significant amount of money should be reason enough for you to get involved.
