Social Advice for Exam Time
By Kim Kapesi-Miller (3L) & Caleigh Rabbitte (2L)
Curious as to how you can be social this December? Read on!
Romantic Lunches
Want to keep up an active dating life but unsure of how to do it with your limited time? The microwaves in the Gavel are a great place to stand around awkwardly and chat with somebody. The time goes so slowly that it will seem like you have spent the entire afternoon together. Possible conversation topic? Lean cuisine vs. hungry man.
Hub Mall
This mall is an absolute hive of activity during exam season! For those who can’t be bothered to go to the grocery store and actually prepare your own food, HUB mall can be a great 20 minute escape of socialization. Before attempting this, please practice the “acknowledgement of presence head nod” for law students that you know, but aren’t actually friends with.
Hazing Rituals
For all of those “in the know”, the MacLean Reading Room is one of the most hopping social spaces during exams. You know you are the “in crowd” when you start glaring at people who sneeze, cough, or breathe loudly (you know who you are). If you are constantly being glared at (1Ls), this social activity is akin to hazing- if you survive the death glares through December, you will become “one of them” by April.
Hanging out
It’s simple really. Ask a few friends if they would like to join you for an evening of lively discussion, and tell them to BYOB – Bring your own books! Study groups are a great way to learn about law, and also learn to hate your fellow students. After a few of these sessions, spending time by yourself seems like a great idea!
After-Exams Party
After your exam, you will find many students are eager to get things off their chest by discussing their impending success (or failure). Don’t be surprised if you’re suddenly standing in a circle with your backpacks in the middle as you pour over your class notes to see if you got question 3 right. This often results in over-confidence for the “Gunner” and sheer disappointment for “The Hangover”. “The Pretender” is busy telling everybody how little studying they did before hand, and yet how the questions just seemed “so easy”. “Everything’s going to be alright” started drinking before the exam and cannot seem to remember any of the questions- they are busy talking to the “Interview Master” about how it doesn’t matter what their grades are, they have a summer job. As expected, the “Over-Achiever” isn’t present- they are off planning the drink session to follow.
