93.8% of Voters Call for Change
By John Chandler (2L), D.J. Lynde (3L), & Nick Peterson (3L)
From November 17 to November 20, a poll was conducted from 12 noon to 2 p.m. and administered by 14 volunteers. The question posed to students was whether they support their student government (the Law Students’ Association) in pursuing a change in the undergraduate law degree designation from LL.B. to J.D. 342 of the 511 undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law voted, representing a 67.5% voter turnout.
The votes were counted on the evening of November 20. Present at the vote count were the poll’s organizers: John Chandler (2L), D.J. Lynde (3L) and Nick Peterson (3L), as well as two scrutineers: Alexander Witt (3L) and Scott Matheson (2L). The results are as follows: 21 votes against the change (6.2%), 318 votes in favour of the change (93.8%). Three votes were deemed to be spoiled for not clearly indicating either option. This result demonstrates an overwhelming support from students for change from the LL.B. to the J.D.
We would like to thank the students who took the time to better inform themselves on this issue and for taking the time to vote. As well, we would like to thank our 14 volunteers who helped administer the vote and the two scrutineers overseeing the counting of votes. This result has been submitted to Dean Bryden for review, who will consult Faculty of Law alumni about this change. The poll result will also be presented to the Law Faculty Council in February.
