I was sitting dockside with my feet in a warm Ontario lake reading the Economist mid-August, and a particular article struck me head on. It was a criticism of the ingrained psyche the Germans have pertaining to the structure and goals of their domestic economy. The writer was clearly articulate and made an adequate and flowing logical argument. The article concluded with the suggestion that the German economy (despite showing some of the best numbers in the world) should abandon its technical and specialized export economy with its trade surpluses and instead become a net importer. The message behind the advice? The Germans must become more consumerist. Fools! No doubt that would increase the German GDP true, but they’ve reached entirely the wrong social conclusion.
So what does this have to do with law school? Not much, it’s actually pretty much a thinly veiled attempt to propagate my socially moderate – center left views to a captive audience. My apologies. It does however; nicely lead into a parallel thought which directly pertains to your imminent arrival or continuing studies in this law school.
Law school is fantastic. It is intellectually stimulating, you are surrounded by a myriad of highly sophisticated and knowledgeable individuals and it is a challenge. However, I have one major beef with the future lawyerly world: it makes an individual one of a herd. Suit and tie, black shoes, conservative views and ladies… short hair only. Alternative views are kept out or coated in a slick black shoe polish and hidden away behind solid oak cabinets. Some will tell you that to make the big bling you must smile, nod, and work ridiculously long hours. That is true. What I am trying to tell you is to smell the roses before your head enters a sphincter.
Law school requires you to be a bright individual. Bright individuals don’t just come in gray but rather a plethora of colours and flavours. The Law School here at the University of Alberta is front and center at promoting student life. There are a number of very good opportunities to get out and meet your peers both in and outside the faculty. Take advantage of these! It is amazing what you can pack into a schedule you already thought was full. Join SLS and law show! Honestly, you’ll regret it if you don’t. Join anyone of the variety of groups available for you in the coming weeks! Environmental law, feminist law, wine & cheese, squash or rugby.
You need to be both intelligent and diligent to succeed in this endeavour. You do not need to emulate the outdated social beliefs and roles. The Economist is a magazine reflecting certain prevailing biases which are reflective of their very powerful readership. You will likewise be hit head on with set standards and expectations in regards to your personality and behaviour.
Law school will take 3 of the best years of your life, ensure you live them.
